Seeding Creators Before a Launch: A Field Guide

Send product. Don't ask for posts. Watch what happens. Here's how seeding actually works.

Seeding is the cheapest, slowest, most effective pre-launch tactic in influencer marketing. It's also the one most brands skip because the ROI is hard to attribute. Skip it anyway and your launch underperforms.

What seeding is

You send product to creators in your target community. You don't require posts. You don't pay. You just put the product into the hands of the people whose opinion shapes your category.

Why it works

Roughly 30–50% of seeded creators post organically. Of those, 5–10% become long-term advocates. The other 50% don't post — but they remember the brand, they talk about it offline, they recommend it to peers.

How to do it right

Pick fewer, pick better. 20 thoughtfully chosen creators outperform 200 mass-mailed PR boxes.

Personalize the package. Handwritten note. Reference their actual content. Make the unboxing feel like a moment, not a mailroom.

Don't ask for posts. The moment you ask, it stops being seeding and becomes a free deliverable. Trust the process.

Follow up once. Two weeks after delivery: "Hope you're loving it. Would love your thoughts — no obligation to post." That's it.

What to measure

Not posts. Not impressions. Track: response rate, posting rate, sentiment of organic posts, and the conversion of seeded creators into future paid collaborations.

Brands that seed consistently build a bench of warm creators they can activate fast for launches and campaigns. That bench is the actual asset.
