UTMs vs. Promo Codes vs. Affiliate Links: When to Use Each

Three tracking methods, three different blind spots. Here's how to combine them.

AffiliateTrackingAttribution

Most creator programs default to one tracking method and miss most of their attributable revenue. The right answer is layered.

UTMs

Tracks clicks. Cheap, easy, breaks the moment a viewer leaves the platform and comes back via Google. Captures roughly 30–50% of true attribution.

Best for: organic posts where you control the link.

Promo codes

Tracks code redemption at checkout. Captures viewers who don't click but remember the offer. Works across platforms — same code, same creator, regardless of where viewer first saw it.

Drawback: codes get screenshot-shared. Use creator-specific codes to deduplicate.

Best for: programs where price-discount is on-brand.

Affiliate links

Trackable URLs that drop a cookie. More robust than UTMs but still affected by browser privacy and 7-day windows. Modern affiliate platforms layer in fingerprint-based attribution to compensate.

Best for: ongoing affiliate programs and creators driving traffic to your site directly.

The combined stack

Issue every creator: a UTM-tagged link, a unique promo code, and an affiliate link. Triangulate at the end of each campaign. The difference between methods tells you where attribution is leaking.
